Day 1: March 14th 2018
Arrive at Dulles International Airport (IAD) at least three hours in advance of South African Airways flight 208, which departs at 5:35 p.m.
Day 2: March 15th, 2018
Arrive Dakar –DSS
Arrive in Dakar at Blaise Diagne, Dakar’s brand new, modern airport at 6: 35 a.m. You will be met outside the Immigrations area by our Senegalese local tour operator’s hospitality staff who will guide you through Customs and onto the Motorcoach outside that awaits you. Transfer to Radisson Blu Hotel and check in, after which you can rest or have lunch on your own.
At 2:00 p.m. Depart from the hotel for an orientation tour of Dakar. You will visit the main highlights of the Senegalese capital city so full of contrast.
You will visit the bustling markets of Kermel and Sandaga, the Soumbedioune handicraft market, and finally the Tilen Market famous for medicinal herbs and the deep knowledge of its traditional healers. Next, you will visit the Great Mosque of Dakar set against the backdrop of sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean followed by a visit to Grand Theater and the Parliament House. No visit to Dakar is complete without visiting one of West Africa’s most prestigious academic institutions, Cheick Anta Diop University. While visiting the university, you will also discuss Senegalese architectural history and also see the picturesque Medina district and the Fann residential district. The tour will conclude with a stop at the tremendous African Renaissance Monument with breathtaking views of the city.
7:30 p.m. Depart the hotel for Loutcha restaurant, which specializes in African gastronomy, in downtown Dakar. You will enjoy one of the national dishes of Senegal. After this welcome dinner, enjoy a Senegalese evening with music entertainment in a typical place of Dakar. Return to your hotel for the night.
Day 3: March 16th, 2018
9:30 a.m. After breakfast at your hotel depart for the Goree Island Ferry Terminal.
10:00 a.m. The ferry departs for Goree Island, the island from which millions of enslaved Africans were forcibly retained until shipped to the Americas. Upon arrival at Goree Island start your visit of this historic and cultural sanctuary with the “House of Slaves”, where you will attend a lecture delivered by the curator on “300 years of Slave trading in Senegal and West Africa”. You will have an opportunity to walk through the Slave House, seeing the “Door of No Return” and the rooms where women, men and children were separated and envisioning what it was like to be imprisoned in these close, dank quarters for months before finally boarding a ship for the Middle Passage. Have a moment of meditation at the Auction Block before visiting the Fort and its memorial dedicated to the Martyrs. Afterwards enjoy a special lunch at a seaside restaurant overlooking the beautiful harbor of Goree .
In the afternoon visit the historic Museum and the City Hall of Goree.
4:30 p.m. Depart by ferry to Dakar where you will arrive at 5:00 p.m.
7:00 p.m. Enjoy the remainder of the evening at leisure and venture out to a Senegalese restaurant for dinner on your own. Accommodation on bed and breakfast at Radisson Blu Hotel, a 5 star hotel.
Day 4: March 17th, 2018
Day at Leisure to explore on your own, shop or relax at poolside at your lovely 5* hotel. Have a birthday dinner at restaurant “Café de Rome de Dakar” and share the birthday cake.
Day 5: March 18th, 2018
Dakar/Saly via Pink Lake, Retba and Bambilor
After breakfast at your hotel….
9:00 a.m. Depart Dakar for the Pink Lake Retba. You will drive through the outskirts of Dakar and through the Niayes vegetable belt surrounding the Senegal capital city of Dakar. Once at the Pink Lake, you will enjoy the fun drive in a 4×4 vehicle around the lake, passing through a Fulani village where you may meet the chief of the village, other notables and the inhabitants. You will also meet the “Salt harvesters” around the lake and have an opportunity to exchange and socialize with them. After the adventurous ride, stop for lunch at Keur Salim Lodge.
In the afternoon you will attend a traditional Senegalese naming ceremony at the village of Bambilor. Here you will be welcomed by the “Master of Ceremony” in the central place of the village, and you will participate in a naming ceremony with the villagers, where each member of the
group will receive his or her African name with respect to the purest African traditions of celebration. Local folklore with songs and dances will accompany this unique moment and experience. At the end of the afternoon, transfer to Saly resort where you will check-in for the night. Enjoy the evening and Dinner at Lamantin Beach Hotel or similar.
Day 6: March 19th, 2018
Saly resort & Bandia Animal Safari
Enjoy Breakfast at the hotel, after which you will depart for Bandia National Safari Park, where you will see antelope, elephants, monkeys, warthogs and other wild animals living in their natural habitat. Lunch . In the afternoon return to Lamantin Hotel, where you will enjoy dinner this evening.
Day 7: March 20th, 2018
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and a full day at leisure to relax, sit around the pool, swim or walk the beach or venture into town. Lunch and Dinner at the Hotel.
In the late evening at 10:00 p.m. depart the Hotel for Blaise International Airport in Dakar, where you will check in for your flight home.
Day 8: March 21st, 2018
At 1:55 a.m. Depart via South African Airlines flight 208; Arrive Dulles International Airport at 6:25 a.m.
At 6:25 a.m. Arrive Washington Dulles International Airport. Welcome home!
